Private archive intelligence for broadcasters

Find the exact moment. Not just the file.

Broadcasters hold decades of interviews, speeches, breaking-news coverage and rushes. Metacognitus makes that private archive searchable in everyday newsroom language — returning the exact moments inside the footage, with timestamps, previews and the rights information your archive already holds.

No archive migration. No MAM replacement. Your media stays where it is.

Demos are run directly by our team, using searches your newsroom brings.

Your newsroom knows the footage exists. Finding it is the hard part.

When filenames, tags and descriptions do not describe what actually happens inside the video, useful moments become effectively invisible — regardless of how much the organisation owns.

Search depends on metadata quality

Names are misspelt, subjects were described differently across decades, and older items were catalogued sparsely or not at all.

Finding the file is not finding the moment

The usable material is one question inside a 90-minute press conference or one reaction inside a long interview.

Archives are fragmented

Production storage, historical archive, newsroom systems and legacy tape libraries rarely search as one.

Archive knowledge lives in people

A senior archivist knows which programme and year holds a moment that no metadata would reveal.

“Tell me about the last time someone in your newsroom knew a piece of footage existed, but could not find it quickly enough to use it.”

Today versus with Metacognitus

Metacognitus makes existing broadcast archives searchable in natural language — down to the exact moment — without replacing the MAM.

Today

  1. Remember the programme
  2. Search metadata and guess keywords
  3. Ask the archive team
  4. Open several long videos and scrub
  5. Verify rights separately
  6. Send the clip to the producer

With Metacognitus

  1. Describe the moment in normal language
  2. Review the best-matching moments
  3. Play from the exact timestamp
  4. Check source, programme and rights
  5. Hand off to your existing workflow

Three steps. No migration.

The first engagement is deliberately small: connect a representative sample, ask real newsroom questions, and open the exact usable moment.

01

Connect a representative sample

We index alongside your existing archive, read-only where practical, preserving your title, date, programme, source and rights fields.

02

Ask in newsroom language

Journalists, producers and researchers describe what they need — in any of your newsroom’s working languages.

03

Open the exact moment

Results return ranked moments with timestamps, previews, confidence, source and rights status, then hand off to your normal production workflow.

Your existing archive one search box the exact usable moment

Every result is a moment, with its evidence attached.

File search stops at the asset. Metacognitus is designed to return the usable range — with provenance, confidence and rights visible together.

Ask in one language. Find material recorded in another.

A researcher can ask in English about an interview conducted in Hindi, while the archive’s own metadata uses a third wording.

Illustrative newsroom scenarios. These are not claims about any specific archive’s contents, and the confidence and rights values shown demonstrate how results are presented rather than measured performance.

Keep your MAM. Keep your storage. Make everything searchable.

Replacing a media asset management platform is a far larger project than fixing archive search. Metacognitus is additive: it sits alongside the systems your newsroom already runs.

  • Works alongside existing MAM, archive and storage environments
  • Read-only integration where practical during a pilot
  • Preserves your existing title, date, programme, source and rights fields
  • Hands the selected moment off to your normal production and editing workflow
  • Designed for heterogeneous estates — more than one archive or repository
  • No change of content ownership at any point

A perfect clip is only useful if it can be used.

Metacognitus displays the rights and usage information your archive already holds, next to every result. Where that information is missing or ambiguous, the result is labelled Review required. We never infer or invent a permission.

No silent rights assumptions. Unknown rights appear as unknown.

Editorial and licensing decisions remain with your team. Metacognitus assists retrieval; it does not clear rights.

Who it’s for

Built for organisations that already own valuable private archives and do not want to replace the systems around them.

National broadcasters & networks

Make decades of national history searchable by any journalist in seconds — without replacing the archive.

Regional & digital newsrooms

Give a smaller newsroom the archive-research capability of a much larger organisation.

Archive & syndication teams

Turn difficult-to-discover footage into inventory your customers can actually find and license.

MAM & workflow vendors

Add multilingual exact-moment discovery to your customers’ existing archives without asking them to migrate.

Start with a benchmark, not a platform decision.

The first engagement is deliberately small. We connect a representative sample of your archive, agree a set of real newsroom searches, measure how long those searches take today, and run the same searches through Metacognitus.

Duration4–6 weeks
Archive sample~100–500 hours, chosen to include poorly tagged material
Content mixInterviews, studio programmes, press conferences, field reports, archive packages
Languages2–4 of your newsroom’s working languages
Participants5–15 journalists, producers, archive researchers or syndication staff
Benchmark set30–50 real searches your team has historically found slow or difficult
IntegrationRead-only where practical; no newsroom workflow redesign during the benchmark
DeliverableBenchmark report with measured before/after results, plus a production proposal

What we measure

  • Whether the relevant moment appears in the first five results
  • Whether the first result is immediately usable
  • Reduction in median time from search to usable moment
  • Which useful footage surfaced that existing search did not return
  • Rights visibility on returned results, with unknowns shown as unknown

These are proposed acceptance thresholds we agree with you before starting — not claimed results.

The question at the end is not whether the technology looks impressive. It is whether your newsroom found footage it previously struggled to find, and found it materially faster.

Security and data handling

Broadcasters will not progress a conversation without this. We state only what is true today, and describe intent as intent.

  • Your archive remains yours. Metacognitus takes no ownership of your content.
  • Private by default — your archive is never pooled with another organisation’s material.
  • Read-only integration wherever your environment permits it during a benchmark.
  • Named users, access controls and an activity record for pilot environments.
  • Deployment model, data residency and retention are agreed with you in writing before any material is connected.
  • Your material is not used to train models for other customers.

Security architecture, data residency and access controls are designed around your requirements and documented before your archive is connected. We are happy to complete your vendor security assessment.

See it against your own archive problem.

Bring two or three searches your newsroom has struggled with. We will show how Metacognitus returns the exact moments, with timestamps, confidence and rights status.

Questions we usually get

Do we have to replace our MAM?

No. Metacognitus is additive and sits alongside existing archive, MAM and storage systems.

Does our media have to move?

No. Benchmarks are designed to run without relocating your master media, read-only where practical.

What stage is the product at?

Metacognitus is in active development and we are selecting design partners for the Archive Discovery Benchmark. We will tell you precisely what is working today on the call.

Which languages are supported?

We scope 2–4 of your working languages for a benchmark and expand from there. Cross-language retrieval — asking in English about Hindi footage — is a core design goal.

How do you handle rights?

We display the rights data your archive already holds and mark anything unclear as Review required. We never infer permissions.

What does a demo involve?

A 30-minute call. Bring your hardest archive searches. No procurement commitment and no purchase required.
